PhD Student for Biomedical Ultrasound & Elastography Research

Overview
The Biomedical Ultrasound Research Lab, led by Dr. Hsiao-Chuan Liu (Assistant Professor, UMass Amherst BME), is seeking motivated PhD students to join the research team. The lab is located at UMass Chan Medical School and focuses on developing advanced imaging methods to quantify tissue biomechanics. Current projects emphasize ultrasound shear wave elastography, wearable ultrasound imaging systems, and optical coherence elastography (OCE). The group maintains strong collaborations between engineering and clinical researchers.

Ultrasound shear wave elastography
Optical coherence elastography for biomechanical assessment
Wearable ultrasound devices
Translational applications in oncology, tissue engineering, neurosurgery, ICU, et al.

Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Seismology or a closely related discipline
Strong interest in medical ultrasound, elastic waves, or translational research
Academic excellence demonstrated by coursework, research experience, or publications
Skills in image/signal processing, programming (e.g., MATLAB, Python), or device prototyping
Specialization in Ultrasonics, Materials Science, Mechanics, Physics, and Medical Engineering. Candidates with an Electrical Engineering background are also welcome.

Preferred Qualifications
Prior research experience in ultrasound imaging, elastography, or optical imaging modalities
Familiar with the Verasonics ultrasound system or similar research platforms
Familiar with soft materials or meta material designs
